Dénia sits below the Montgó, 753 metres high and a natural park since 1987. On a hill by the sea stands a castle of Islamic origin, now home to the town's archaeological museum, and next to it the old seafaring quarter of Baix la Mar.
Ferries leave the port for Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca; Ibiza is from two and a quarter hours away. Tram line 9 runs from here through Calp and Altea to Benidorm. In 2015 UNESCO named Dénia a Creative City of Gastronomy, and its signature product is the red prawn. The coastline runs for more than 20 kilometres, with sandy beaches and rocky coves.
About 47,000 people live here, and almost one in four is a foreign national. New builds account for more than a fifth of all sales at the notary, 43 in 100 buyers are foreign, and the largest group is Dutch.
