The dome of the church of Our Lady of Consolation, covered in blue and white tiles, can be seen from anywhere in the bay. Steep pedestrian lanes of the El Fornet quarter climb up to it from the sea, and next to the church there are two viewpoints. In 2023 National Geographic named Altea among the twenty most beautiful small towns in Spain.
People live here all year round, not just in summer: about 24,000 residents, almost 38% of them born abroad. The town has the Faculty of Fine Arts of Miguel Hernández University and the Palau Altea concert hall. The beaches are pebble, and in 2026 four of them got the Blue Flag: Cap Blanc, El Bol, La Roda and L'Espigó. The tram from Benidorm to Dénia runs through the town.
A new home in Altea is a rarity: over a year, only 2.3% of notarised sales were new builds. Almost all new housing sits on the slopes above the bay, in and around Altea Hills, and it is villas with their own pool. My survey currently holds 7 projects in Altea, from €790,000, with the most expensive projects starting at €2,690,000. There are ready homes too.
If you want an apartment by the sea, I would also look at neighbouring Calpe and Villajoyosa.
